just links

LITERARY

the world is crazy and j. k. rowling hand-wrote and -illustrated seven copies of a book for which amazon paid almost two million quid: scroll down for the pictures. i still love her.

AURALLY

on my walks---with weights! and shorts!---i set the zune to "shuffle". this means that i often get three indigo girls' songs in a row, followed by a sinead o'connor dirge about child abuse (i still love her) and then something vaguely synthetic that sounds like kate bush. when this happens---always---i take a Go With The Flow attitude, and comfort myself with the idea that although i am exercising, i am exercising eccentrically.

however.

yesterday a splashing sound in my headphones, followed by some sparkliness and then upbeat tempo, alerted me to something different. it turns out i was listening to "Golden Fish in the Pool", by a band called Toy. this link will take you to their "myspace" page, where you should listen to "Rabbit Pushing Mower". i like them very much.

EXTREMIE

samimi-extremie posted the other day about a great band called THAO. i like the music with this video clip, a lot.

VISUALLY

also in music, i liked watching/listening to vanessa paradis's new (?) song, "L'incendie". she's a great little mover.

SPEAKING OF THE FRENCH

carla bruni, in between when she was a model and when she became the first lady of The Country Formerly Known As Part Of Gaul, was a singer slash musician.

some people complain about how whispering occasionally gets accepted for actual singing. i first listened to bruni's "Le derniere minute" and "Quelqu'un m'a dit" a couple of years ago, and the whispering? still love it.

LITERARY + FRENCH

i'm still on a mailing list for the local bookshop in my parents' neighbourhood. no, seriously, it's not second-hand, and it's not a franchise. it's an honest-to-goodness independent bookshop. THERE IS STILL HOPE.

anyway, they sent me this invitation for me + guest to attend a free screening of a french film, "Moliere". i went hunting for reviews of it, because i'd never heard of it before, and the New York Times provided me with this---frankly---scathing report of how bad of a film it was. like, apparently it almost wasn't even a film. it was that bad.

the other thing is, is that the complimentary screening falls on the evening of the same day that shaun gets here. (!!!)

on top of that, it's in french with english subtitles. i think that shaun is not a fan of french films. nor does he relish reading movies.

also, he will most probably be jet-lagged out of his mind, after a day's worth of travelling in seating designed for people who have legs the length of t-rex's front arms.

so did i RSVP to guarantee us free spots at the film? YOU BETCHA.

can't wait till you get here, my love!
